Minister Matteo Piantedosi was born in Naples on 20th April 1963. He is married and has two daughters. A graduate in law, qualified to practise law, he joined the Civil Administration of the Interior in April 1989 and was assigned to the prefecture of Bologna, where for eight years he held the position of chief of staff.
In February 2007, he was appointed deputy prefect in the same prefecture until 2009, when he was called to the ministry of the Interior to head the Legislative Affairs and Parliamentary Relations office.
In 2011, he was entrusted with the post of head of Cabinet of the head of the department for Personnel Policies of the civil administration and for means and financial resources.
He was appointed prefetto of Lodi on 3rd August 2011.
In January 2012, he was appointed deputy Chief of Staff of the minister of the Interior and from June 2012 senior deputy Chief of Staff.
On 16th November 2012, the Council of Ministers appointed him Deputy Director General of Public Security for the coordination and planning activities of the Police Forces.
From April 2014 until May 2017, he was also the Managing Authority of the National Operational Programme “Security for Development-Convergence Objective 2007/2013”, the National Operational Programme “Law-abiding 2014/2020” and the Complementary Operational Programme for the Plan 2014/2020, and also the Responsible Authority of the “European External Borders Fund 2007/2013” and the “Internal Security Fund 2014/2020”.
He chaired the advisory commission for the implementation of the European Single Emergency Number service according to the single response centre model in the national territory.
From 15th May 2017 to 10th June 2018, he held the position of Prefetto of Bologna.
On 11th June 2018, he was appointed Chief of Staff of the minister of the Interior.
From 17thAugust 2020 to 22nd October 2022, he was prefetto of Rome.
On 22nd October 2022, he was appointed minister of the Interior in the Meloni’s Government.
